Monday afternoon was a day of guilty pleasures... cold, gray, sort of a "dank" day, a good fire (well, ok, gas logs...but the effect is still the same), a comfortable chair and some stolen time to work a little bit on this...
...and a marathon of The Closer which lead up to some two hour "Christmas" show. I didn't think I'd make it that long. It wasn't really in the plan but by the time I looked up, it was almost time for the show so I watched it. While it wasn't THAT great, I did get a kick out of how they pictured Brenda Lee's mom and dad's home (in Atlanta) "dressed up" for the holidays. Totally southern, totally over the top with stuff everywhere. Hmmm, why did some of it look so familiar? And when her mom made the comment that the outfit she had on was her "going to the airport" outfit and needed to change into her "going to the mall" outfit...both of which were tacky Christmas sweaters, I just laughed out loud at the truism of it all. Thank goodness my daughters now use my OLD tacky Christmas sweaters when they have their annual "Tacky Christmas Party"....and everyone wears their mom's old Christmas "outfits" and exclaims how much they all look their mamas. Geeze, what a sight we must have been. Add the element of working in an elementary school where you get caught up in the "teacher clothes" Christmas "outfits" and you see what I mean. I'm glad that the proverbial red shirt or sweater will do it for now.
Oh, and what IS that thing pictured above? It is a piece of punch needle embroidery of a design I adapted from a picture of an old hooked rug. Many years ago I received this postcard from the then Thos. K. Woodard (now known as Woodard & Greenstein) rug, quilt and antique shop. I held on to that postcard for years and years, knowing I wanted to make something with it. My first things were needlepoint pillows for my mom and best friend.
Then I discovered needlepunch embroidery, much like miniature rug hooking. It is very relaxing and it was just what I needed on Monday afternoon!
